We’ve previously written on the importance of getting your furnace serviced before winter, but did you know there’s more you can do? Below we will share essential tips for keeping your HVAC system more efficient.

Benefits of Keeping Your HVAC System More Efficient

Your home or business consumes an enormous amount of energy, and your HVAC system is one of the leading causes. You can significantly cut down on your power bills by keeping your system more efficient. In addition to lower bills, your HVAC system will need less energy to run, which means it will extend the life of the system. As experts, we can tell you it’s no small task to replace any component of your HVAC.

1. Inspect and Replace Air Filters

Many units require new filters every six month in residential uses. This number may be off depending on your usage. For example, the more occupants in the home – whether two legged or four legged – the more likely it is that the time frame is shorter. When filters become clogged, it puts more of a strain on the system. More strain means more power to operate it, as well as a higher likelihood of premature failure.

2. Get a Programmable Thermostat

These handy devices allow you to set temperatures and ventilation rates in accordance with your needs. Programmable thermostats allow you to set a different temperature on your system when you are away, in bed, or any other time you don’t need the HVAC to work as hard. Many models are available, easy to install, and come with tons of features – such as the ability to set from your smart phone.

3. Have Your System Tuned-Up Regularly

Just like your car’s engine, your system needs regular tuneups as an important part of keeping your HVAC more efficient. Cleaning the system allows it to run as it is intended. When the coil is dirty or components are running below manufacturer specifications, it causes your system to work harder in order to overcompensate for the lack of air flow or parts that aren’t performing to their best ability. This results in increased energy consumption.
